NRGP Inauguration of WEISI Warehouse

On July 12th 2016, President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated a warehouse at Weisi in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

This Warehouse is one of many warehouses and packhouses constructed under the Northern Rural Growth Programme in the Northern, Upper East, Upper West and Brong Ahafo Regions of Ghana.

The Government of Ghana applied for and received a loan from International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and the African Developament Bank (AfDB) towards the implementation of the Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP).

NRGP is a 2-phase , 8 year programme covering all the 3 Regions of the north and the adjoining districts of Brong Ahafo.

The overall goal of the programme is to contribute to equitable and sustainable poverty reduction and food security among rural households.

The specific objective is to developing inclusive and profitable agricultural food chains to generate agricultural surplus production and orient it towards remunerative markets in Southern Ghana and abroad thereby increasing Northern Ghana area rural households’ income on a sustainable basis

This is being achieved through the promotion of profitable Agricultural Value Chains, the development of Value Chain Governance structures such as the District Value Chain Committees (DVCCs), the strenghtening of capacities of Farmer Based Organisations (FBOs) and other actors and then linking them up to markets and financial services.

In addition to all these is the provision of relevant value chain infrastruture such as market infrastructure (roads, warehouses and packhouses) and irrigation facilities.

The programme implementation is done with strong gender and environmental considerations.

This documentary tells the story of the Northern Rural Growth Programme and its positive impact on the lives of the rural poor in Northern Ghana.
